My Story...
Over fifteen years ago I quit playing full time, after pursuing my dream of playing on the PGA Tour. I had played at a top NCAA D-1 school, worked as hard as I could on my game, but I felt like I was just going in circles. I went to the PGA Tour Qualifying tournament, and didn’t make it through. I had no tour to play on and was burnt out with frustration because I didn’t know how to get much better. I felt like it was mostly luck.
I quit playing and got a “real job”, outside of golf, I couldn’t stand being at a golf course. I would still play with my dad when I would travel home for holidays, and my scores were far higher than they were when I played golf every day. After a couple years out of golf, I began to miss it and I started teaching golf lessons on the side. I enjoyed it, sharing what I had learned over the years to others, so I began to teach full time. In 2011, Trackman came out, and disproved the traditional “ball flight laws”. Now I was curious, and I began diving deep into the research and reconnecting with my old coaches who were now teaching some of the best players in the world. Fast forward to 2017, and I felt like I was playing the best golf of my life, despite playing golf every day, in fact, I played less than 3 rounds of golf per month. I had learned a few simple things that I would practice hitting into a net between lessons, that gave me the confidence to go out to tournaments again and shoot under par. At the end of 2017, I was named South Texas PGA Player of the Year, competed in my first PGA Tour event (which was a major), and have qualified for a couple more PGA Tour events, while starting a business, teaching full time and still not playing much on the course, let alone practice on the driving range, I have no motivation to do that! In 2022, I was once again named South Texas PGA Player of the Year, and will be playing in my sixth PGA Professional Championship in April of 2025, attempting once again to qualify for my second PGA Championship.
Why at the age of 40, without having much time to practice, do I feel like I can compete at the highest level, despite not having time to practice or play? Because I now understand my golf swing, and the most important aspects to work on when I do have time to hit some balls at the golf academy. Every time I hit a ball, I get feedback from the launch monitor. I know exactly WHY my ball does what it does, and I am not guessing or listening to random tips. Long story short, I finally “OWN MY GAME”. I am fortunate to have access to the resources I need to understand my game, and my goal is to provide golfers of all ages and abilities those resources through my investments of equipment at Golf Performance Group, as well as share my knowledge of 30 years playing this game. I believe golfers need to develop a mindset that allows them to “play” when they are on the golf course, not just tinker with swing positions based on the latest tip they heard on YouTube or from their buddy who is better than them.
