Why is Journaling Important for Golf?

In step 2 of the mental toughness program for golf, we discuss journaling and the impacts it can have on your golf game. It is common that the golfer will look at me with a blank stare, like “really, I am paying for you to tell me how to Journal? How is this going to help me with my game?!” I am here to tell you that journaling is one of the most powerful tools to change your mindset, which leads to lower scores on the golf course!

Some of the benefits of journaling that promote mental toughness on the golf course:

  1. Helps clarify thoughts and feelings
  2. Reduces stress towards situations you’re uncomfortable with
  3. You are able to identify your dreams and goals more clearly. When you write it down, it signals to the brain this is important!
  4. Boost memory and comprehension
  5. Strengthens self discipline
  6. Helps you overcome tough experiences
  7. Helps you relive positive experiences

You can start journaling after a round of golf. You can start by asking yourself these questions:

  1. What went well?
  2. What situations on the golf course made you uncomfortable? How did you over come it?
  3. What needs to be worked on?
  4. What would you do differently next time you play?

When you’re journaling try to be as detailed as possible. The more you can write about about your feelings, the more you will learn from yourself.

Your brain is like a muscle, the more you can exercise it the stronger it gets. It is the little things that great players do everyday that make them great.
