I knew it would be an environment I had never experienced. I expected the first round tee shot to be the most nerve racking I had ever experienced. The day of the event, I arrived an extra 45 minutes earlier than I normally do. Some might think this is bad, I knew it was going to be important to slow myself down in the hours leading up to the first tee shot. With big events comes distractions and uncertainties, I didn’t want something unexpected to come up and make me feel rushed, adding to the performance anxiety that was naturally going to occur.

I practiced visualization & breathing patterns to prepare for this high pressure event. This is something I did regularly (3-4 times per week) as a full time player, but have not done it much now that I only play part time. The day of the first round I planned to listen to my breathing app for the entire warm up session. I figured if I had the app playing in my ear the entire warm up routine, it would be a constant reminder to focus on something positive that will create a calm, athletic mindset when the pressure is at it is highest.

This strategic plan turned out to be a great decision, as I felt the normal tension and nerves when I arrived at the first tee for the first round. These nerves provided me with comfort and familiarity. I knew I could handle the first tee shot like I had done in hundreds of tournaments before.

2. Play the Game

First Tee Shot Success
Depending on who you talk to – some would say it was terrible, I would say it was a success. Sure, it went 40 yards right into the trees, but I had 70 yards of room to the right and still be in play for the next shot with out penalty!

I wish i could say I had that success for the remaining 35 holes. Instead I played a different game than I usually do when I’m out with friends or playing in the South Texas PGA Section event. The goal when playing golf – is to play golf! I never realized there was a point of diminishing returns when it game to trust and commitment in your pre shot routine. Sure, you want to be fully committed to each shot, but you also want play strategically and error on the safe side of the target each shot.

I missed numerous times on the wrong side of the target causing me to hit it in the water on 2 occasions, and in a terrible spot in the trees causing me to make an 8 on the hole. This cost me 7 strokes that were purely due to terrible course management – typically my strength. Part of these errors were due to lack of experience on the big stage. I will learn from this next time and play my normal game. Remember, golf is a game of MISSES! It’s not always the guy that hits the most fairways and greens, typically its the SMARTEST golfer on the course that errors in the right direction.

3. Sure, some of them had their coaches with them, but when I watched the coach – they didn’t say much. Hitting balls next to Rory for nearly one hour and he did all the talking – not his coach! These players completely understand their game.

You’re probably thinking “well ya, they’re the best players in the world.” That is true, but how did they get there? Watching the same drills over and over, by Rory, Jordan, Rickie….. I didn’t see a drill that I don’t use regularly with the golfers at the academy. Eyeline, alignment stick, tees in the ground for putting, chalk line, pitch shots from various spots around the green. Seems simple right? Ask yourself, how many times do you hit balls without an alignment stick on the ground? How many times do you warm up your putting without doing the eyeline or pelz putting tutor to make sure your fundamentals are correct? If you can think of one time or more that you skipped those fundamental aspects when warming up – that’s too much!

I saw Adam Scott 3 days in a row on the putting green. Each time he did the same process of drills. I think you will find these pretty familiar and SIMPLE.

Eyeline training aid from 5 feet

Five footers with 4 balls at each quadrant around the hole. Make 4 in a row.

One ball going through routine to different holes.

If he is making sure he does this each warm up during the major championship, don’t you think you should too??

Overall I found that there is nothing magical about these great golfers. They are not freaks of nature (well maybe Rory), but outside of the top 10 in the world, they are just above average talents, working hard on their simple process – EVERYDAY. QUIT EXPERIMENTING!

Every tournament my fellow pro’s would tease me that I am not working enough. Using the excuse that because I was a “teaching” pro, I had more time than the others to work on my game. This couldn’t be farther from the truth!

I am a golf professional first, but I am an entrepreneur at heart. This means I am constantly trying to come up with innovative ways to improve our coaching programs at the academy, online, as well as grow our business in all aspects. I teach 15-20 hours per week, but I spend at least 40 hours running a business per week.

My Goal in 2016?

Returning back to the South Texas PGA for the first full season since moving to coach at Ohio State University, I made it my goal to win our section Player of The Year and qualify for the PGA National Championship (for PGA Professionals).

The Player of the Year receives an exemption into the PGA Tour Shell Houston Open. Owning a golf academy and coaching in Houston this would be a huge benefit in addition to accomplishing my life long dream of playing in a PGA Tour sanctioned event.

My 2016 Practice Plan

Like I said, players often joked that I wasn’t working enough, I practiced more than they did and that’s why I would finish better than them in tournament events. Farthest thing from the truth. Sure I played a couple holes during playing lessons, a few casual scrambles and maybe 9 holes here or there with some friends. But not a true round of golf that the avid golfer does weekly or monthly.

What I DID NOT do

Bang balls on the driving range – never hit one full bucket in a day

Practice at the short game area – outside of a skills competition

Practice my putting for hours on end

Never spent more than 20 min practicing at one time

What I DID do

Assessed my game, technique, tendencies

Educated myself on cause and effect so I could make adjustments

Practiced my swing technique indoors to build proper muscle memory

All practice was in a skills test or competition

Visualization, relaxation techniques – mental game exercises

Aware and deliberate about executing an efficient pre shot routine

Specific workouts that included exercises for balance, flexibility and speed

THE RESULT I didn’t achieve my ultimate goal to play in the Shell Houston Open, but I did manage to qualify for the PGA National Championship in June of 2017, which will be aired on the golf channel.

The total season includes 5 “majors”, those are the five tournaments that are awarded points. Through the first three events I was number 1 on the Player of The Year points list, in great position to achieve my ultimate goal .

After the third event I made a STUPID mistake in my plan. Ball striking as always been a natural strength of mine, if I made more putts – who knows, maybe I would be playing for a living! One day at the academy I decided to refresh myself on Aimpoint for green reading. Sounds harmless, but it was the most STUPID thing I did all year and ultimately cost me a chance for player of the year. I think Aimpoint is a great tool to have, but I will explain a little later how you need to be careful if implementing it into your game (especially if you don’t have time to practice)

The 4th event at Oak Hill Country Club in San Antonio I averaged 36 putts per round, shooting 76-76 finishing way down the leaderboard. It was a good learning experience, but I fell to 3rd on the points list after the event.

For the 5th and final event of the year I didn’t have a chance to practice much, only played a 3 hole practice round due to weather but in those 3 holes I made three putts outside of 10 feet. What did I change from the previous event? Committed to going back to my natural putting routine that is focused on feel and visualization!

Unfortunately I got off to a rough start starting the first round, due to poor tee shots that put me in bad spots, but I battled to shoot +1, 73 – putting me in 21st place after round 1. After the round I hit a few tee shots on the range to work on my tempo, and went home to relax since my body is not use to playing 18 holes! The next 2 rounds I hit it better and shot -2 (70), and -3(69) to capture the last spot!

I finished the tournament -3 the last 4 holes to qualify for the national championship and finish top 5 on the points list for the year. The most interesting part is what saved me, my putting! I averaged 30 putts per round for the tournament, and on the last 4 holes I made 4 crucial pressure packed putts.

15th hole, 10 footer for birdie √16th hole, 12 footer for birdie √ 17th hole, 5 footer for par √

18th hole, 5 footer for birdie (downhill that broke 8 inches) √

Why Aimpoint Was Bad For Me

Aimpoint is focused on angles, and I am a FEEL player. Although it gave me some good lines, it took me out of my routine that is based on feel and seeing the arc of the putt. If I had more time to work on it, it may be great for me – but I didn’t have the time. Getting back to my natural routine created more comfort, leading to confidence and ultimately making more putts.

I know all golfers have the time to work on their game as much as I do. They just need a specific plan in place to work on it when they have free time. Golfers need a clear plan, apply time management skills, access to education and drills and anyone can become a good golfer!

NO EXCUSES, Get a strategic plan and spend 10 minutes per day doing something! I have put my drills, practice programs with video demonstration and education into an online training program. You can get it now for $!

GOLF PERFORMANCE LAB

During my life pursuit to become a world class player and coach, I was blessed to play and coach alongside the best minds in golf. PGA Tour winners, major champions, NCAA Championship players and coaches. While coaching with current Oklahoma State Coach Donnie Darr, I learned the importance of “owning your game”. Anyone can achieve this when given accurate information fo what actually matters and consistent execution to the process.

I will give you the PROCESS, through practical practice plans, drills and exercises. With proper guidance and tools used by PGA Tour professionals, you will know exactly what to work on and when to do it. If a “washed up” teaching professional like myself qualified and competed on the biggest stage of golf, playing less than one round of golf per week, imagine what you could accomplish in your game! Try it for $1 Today

Putting is Simple!

Think about it, how hard is it to make a 6 inch swing and hit it 4 feet to your target? Shouldn’t be very hard! When I was 10 years old, people would talk about about how I couldn’t miss. Then when I turned 18, everyone talked about, “if that kid could putt, he would be good!” So how did this happen? At 10, no golf experience and no THOUGHTS, I would make everything? Yet, after being ranked top 25 in the national junior golf rankings, I was a bad putter? Here’s why… I was obsessed with getting better, I read everything, watched everything, and picked every good putters brain. Power by knowledge, right? WRONG…. I didn’t know which method to go with, and putting became my weakness… Fast forward to my coaching career… My girlfriend, who has never played a round of golf pulls out the putter wheel training aid… I was proud of myself for being able to finally hit it 10 feet without it tipping over… and she puts it down, hits it and it rolls perfectly! Why is this? Because she is athletic and just reacted like an athlete would. So this is what I did. I went to the green, made my focus only of hitting solid putts… next time I played, I rolled it more true than I ever did before… Here’s a simple putting practice for you. 1. Buy the putter wheel… You can find it here 2. Hit 20 putts to warm up your putting every day 3. Play 9 holes only worrying about your routine Routine – Find the line – Commit to the line – Focus on hitting a solid putt down that line If you are someone that thinks too much in putting or don’t trust your stroke…. I recommend copying Aaron Baddelys pre shot routine for putting… He explains it perfectly in this video!

Improve your swing mechanics at home with the heavy golf club drill!

Most players use the excuse that they don’t have “time” to be a better golfer. This is simply not true! I advise all players I work with to ONLY work on their swing changes at HOME or the OFFICE. By doing this you will be focused solely on the proper swing you are trying to make because you are not worried about where the ball is going to go. When you go to the driving range, most people just work on their golf swing, worrying about making a perfect golf swing, and this translates to them working on their swing when they get on the golf course. You can NOT play good golf thinking about your golf swing while trying to shoot a low score.

So now that we have clarified that you can get better from home. I have filmed a demonstration on how to complete the drill effectively on your own. This is a dummy proof drill, you can only get BETTER!

Rules for the Momentus Heavy Golf Club Drill↓

Very slow practice swings. When I say slow, I mean very slow! Stop at each check point position to make sure you are in the right position. Do NOT hit golf shots, just rehearse the proper positions without a golf ball. Reason: Allows you to focus on correct movement because you are not worried about the result of the shot.

→ 3 sets of 10 swings (5 swings super set)

→ Pause for 3 seconds at each position in swing (see video)

→ After each set do 5 slow motion swings without pausing

→ 30% full speed practice swings. Be aware of the correct positions throughout the swing

Add on – I require all of my students to purchase the momentus heavy club.

Benefit of heavy club – improves your technique 10 times faster than a lot weight club

Beware – go slow with a heavy club! Going fast will mess up the sequencing of your golf swing when you go back to a normal club

Heavy club is designed to improve your swing changes faster.

The Pre Shot Routine is essential to developing a process to be relaxed and confident while hitting a golf shot. It is what you have to fall back on when you fall under pressure and need to be clutch!

Analysis: The Thinking Phase

The player must gather all the information necessary regarding the shot that is about to be played. Things to consider:

Lie of the ball

Slope and grain (putting)

Wind direction

Distance to hole

Green, Yellow, or Red Flag

Distance to landing spot

Select appropriate club

Once you have picked out a clear and precise target go into the next phase of the pre-shot routine

Visualization

How do you want the shot to look?

Some people may not be able to see the golf shot in their minds eye, but you can verbalize what you are trying to do, and what you want it to look like.

Gain Feel

After gaining the visual of the shot you want to hit, it is important to then take practice swings developing the feel for the shot you are about to hit. Make your practice swings useful, DO NOT just use them to get loose!

Performance Cue

As you step in to hit the shot, it is important to have a “performance cue” or “swing thought” that will give you the mindset to execute the shot effectively. These performance cues can include:

Breath

Straight back take away

Tempo

Align properly

Trust

This can be the hardest part, in order to increase the chances of your golf shot being great, you need to trust that you have prepared properly. This is the time to let go and focus on your one performance cue.

We will discuss performance cue’s more in your next post. This week I would like you to write down a step-by-step pre shot routine that you think you do. Have a friend hold your pre shot routine check list and see how consistently you go through your routine.

It is important to have a method to your routine. It does not have to be identical every time, but it should incorporate all the steps needed to gain trust in the upcoming shot.

Consistent routines might be the most important trait a golfer can develop. When I was at a College Golf Fellowship retreat at Lee Janzen’s house my sophomore year of college, I had the opportunity to meet David Gossett, former US Amateur Champion and PGA Tour Winner.

David told me the importance of time management and by writing down your daily routine/schedule the night before would help you stay consistent with your academy and golf practice. I took his advice and began to write down each hour of my day the night before. ↓

As you can see on the right, I wrote out my entire practice plan for the day. You can expand on that and write out your complete day including your school and work schedule.

I challenge you to write down your practice the night prior. Do this for 7 straight days and be as detailed as possible. I promise you will notice you accomplish a lot more when you have a plan going into practice compared to just showing up with the plan in your “head”.

Checklist each day this week:

Write out practice plan before arriving at the course –

M__ T__ W__ T__ F__ S__ S__

Next: we will address pre and post shot routines.

Evaluate. Plan. Train. Mindset. Feedback.

Learn the facts about how to improve your golf. Its not the hours you work, its how you work in those hours!

As a golf coach that has seen success and failures of many players, I am fed up with traditional golf instruction. Fact: IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU BETTER. Sure, you might improve your technique, but its not about a perfect swing, its about lower scores! It is my belief that golfers need structure and be shown how to train properly. The best news is you can do the majority of your training from home or the office!

Our programs require little time, but 100% belief and consistency in the process. If you have both of those qualities, I promise it is worth your time!

The goal is to change the way golfers think and approach practice. There is a lot of fluff in golf instruction. With technology and business’ such as Golftec, the game has become full of gadgets rather than a proven blueprint of how to improve your game. Through our online training programs, you will learn proven strategies that have developed champions on all levels of golf.

Do you wonder why the USGA handicap has not lowered in the last 30 years with access to modern golf instruction technology? The answer is simple – players of all levels need guidance and structure on how to plan and track their progression when away from the course.

PGA Coach Online is a performance tool that gives access to any golfer, beginner to professional that wants to take their game to the next level. Our online programs are packed with insight, mental game strategies and blueprints on how to achieve peak performance in your golf game! A step-by-step program on how to structure your practices each week.
