WHAT TO PRACTICE

What are you doing this week to lower your scores?
One of the best game-like drills is competing on the Island Greens Challenge! It is a series of 18 shots, first hole is 35 yards and it finishes at 202 yards.
Watch this short video of little Jonny and I competing

What makes this drill unique is each shot is to an island green, you have to have to dial in your carry distance and total distance. This is one of the easiest ways to lower your scores, learning your real distances! Most players (including myself before using launch monitors), think they know how far they carry their irons, but in reality, 99% don’t, even single digit golfers. How can you stand over a shot with 100% confidence, if you don’t know your distances?

The Perfect Practice

How do you warm up to practice or play?
Most golfers grab a short iron (or even a driver) and start swinging full! This is why most golfers have a terrible impact position (the point in the swing where your club meets the ball). The only way to develop a good impact position for solid, consistent shots is by starting small, hitting pitch shots. Kill two birds with one stone and add in a ladder drill (20, 30, 40, 50 yards…) to dial in your feel for those short wedges around the greens. If you really want to make sure you are getting the most out of your practice, add the impact ball drill – check that drill out here!

Step 1: Start with some dynamic stretching.

Dynamic stretching means moving your muscles and joints through a full range of motion… like leg swings, torso rotations, or walking lunges to warm up the body and prepare it for activity. (I’m not a fitness expert, but trust me) It’s important to do dynamic stretching before hitting balls because it:

Increases blood flow and body temperature

Activates golf-specific muscles and improves mobility

Prepares your body for the movement patterns you’ll use in your swing

In contrast, static stretching (holding a stretch for long periods) can temporarily reduce strength and power, making it better suited for after your practice or round, not before.

Step 2: Start small, and focus on hitting the ball solid

Incorporate the ladder drill

If you’re feeling really frisky, add in the impact ball!

Step 3: Work on swing positions, (only if you know that what you’re working on is correct for your swing). Make sure to only work on one aspect at a time! If you’re going to watch YouTube, quit looking for that secret move, try to understand the fundamentals and focus on the basics. I promise, it will help you a lot more than experimenting!

Step 4: Game-Like Practice (nobody does this)

Simulate golf course conditions, and compete with a friend if you can

Focus on pre shot routine, and being disciplined to only 1 swing thought!

Come try the Island Greens Challenge!

In 2009 I quit playing full time, after pursuing my dream of playing on the PGA Tour. I had played at a top NCAA D-1 school, worked as hard as I could on my game, but I felt like I was just going in circles. I went to the PGA Tour Qualifying tournament, and didn’t make it through. I had no tour to play on and was burnt out with frustration because I didn’t know how to get much better. I felt like it was mostly luck.

I quit playing and got a “real job”, outside of golf, I couldn’t stand being at a golf course. I would still play with my dad when I would travel home for holidays, and my scores were far higher than they were when I played golf every day. After a couple years out of golf, I began to miss it and I started teaching golf lessons on the side. I enjoyed it, sharing what I had learned over the years to others, so I began to teach full time. In 2011, Trackman came out, and disproved the traditional “ball flight laws”. Now I was curious, and I began diving deep into the research and reconnecting with my old coaches who were now teaching some of the best players in the world. Fast forward to 2017, and I felt like I was playing the best golf of my life, despite playing golf every day, in fact, I played less than 3 rounds of golf per month. I had learned a few simple things that I would practice hitting into a net between lessons, that gave me the confidence to go out to tournaments again and shoot under par. At the end of 2017, I was named South Texas PGA Player of the Year, competed in my first PGA Tour event (which was a major), and have qualified for a couple more PGA Tour events, while starting a business, teaching full time and still not playing much on the course, let alone practice on the driving range, I have no motivation to do that! In 2022, I was once again named South Texas PGA Player of the Year, and will be playing in my sixth PGA Professional Championship in April of 2025, attempting once again to qualify for my second PGA Championship.

Why at the age of 40, without having much time to practice, do I feel like I can compete at the highest level, despite not having time to practice or play? Because I now understand my golf swing, and the most important aspects to work on when I do have time to hit some balls at the golf academy. Every time I hit a ball, I get feedback from the launch monitor. I know exactly WHY my ball does what it does, and I am not guessing or listening to random tips. Long story short, I finally “OWN MY GAME”. I am fortunate to have access to the resources I need to understand my game, and my goal is to provide golfers of all ages and abilities those resources through my investments of equipment at Golf Performance Group, as well as share my knowledge of 30 years playing this game. I believe golfers need to develop a mindset that allows them to “play” when they are on the golf course, not just tinker with swing positions based on the latest tip they heard on YouTube or from their buddy who is better than them.

There are many ways to play this game, it is our job as a professional coach to help you find the most efficient way for you to play this game according to your specific goals and lifestyle.

I am extremely happy with the response we have received from our students, and golfers buying into our “holistic” approach to game improvement. Although some amateur golfers (and instructors) still deem it unconventional, the style in which we train at Golf Performance Group has been researched, studied and proven effective by nearly all the top players, coaches, and experts in various fields.I have been blessed to have worked with some of the best coaches in the world, in addition to playing alongside some of the best players in the world and I have a passion for sharing what I have learned with other passionate golfers. I believe private “technical” lessons are only a piece of the process when trying to improve as a golfer. Equal or if not more important, is developing a mindset that creates success on the golf course.

How you practice, balancing different practice styles, dictates your mindset and how much you will improve on the course, which is the ultimate goal – shooting lower scores. Technique is important, but way overdone for most golfers. What other sport have you played that focuses primarily on your technique, rather than playing the game? I.e. picking up a basketball and shooting, or throwing a baseball. Imagine if you trained the technical aspect of throwing a ball.. We would all end up like legendary baseball player Chuck Knoblauch. (note: I just googled how to spell his name and he is a Houston Native!)

Additional benefits related to our training programs:
Learn different practice styles and “game like training”. Case studies done by leading researchers and experts in the sports psychology/ performance coaching field. have proven that balancing private lessons with game like training to you player development plan is much more effective than simply taking just a 1-hour private lesson (technique only, causes confusion, frustration and sometimes makes people worse)

In addition to learning important practice styles, access to the resources I have invested in, using them effectively, receiving accurate feedback consistently is key to improving faster, and achieving your peak performance.

Please subscribe to our blog on the form provided to get more golf player development content. TRAIN SMARTER!

Discussion between JJ Wood, PGA and College Golfer Alec Brown

Arguably, the most important aspect of the golf swing is transition. I preach to all of my players the importance of set up, impact and tempo. All great players incorporate drills every day to practice these aspects and you can to!

There are many training aids out there for set up and impact, but I had not found a training aid effective to give a golfer great feedback for tempo until a couple years ago. Former PGA Tour Rookie of the Year and 2-time PGA Tour winner Gabriel Hjerstedt introduced me to his swing trainer over Thanksgiving when I was back home in Arizona two years ago. We discussed how golf has became full of gadgets and mechanics that are not necessary to make golfers better. He teaches numerous PGA Tour players such as Graham Daleat and Vijay Singh, as well as the weekend golfer. Gabe said that the first two things that get off for tour players when they start playing bad is basic, their alignment and TRANSITION.

As a player, my main swing thought was simple, have a smooth, deliberate transition from the top of my swing to the down swing, and I would more often than not hit that shot solid and the direction I wanted to. But there was never a training aid or device to give me feedback. When I started coaching, I express the importance of tempo and transition but amateurs have a hard time understanding what proper transition should FEEL like. Gabe sent me one and now I live and die by this training aid!

Gabe said since he started teaching amateurs, there has not been one amateur that has the proper transition. This led to him to making his own training aid that is very simple, that players can take with them to warm up every day. Now over 30 PGA Tour pro’s warm up with this every day!

What can proper transition in your golf swing fix?

Club face control at impact for accuracy
Club path on the down swing for less curve
Increase power by improving sequencing from back to downswing

From beginners to tour pro’s, trust me when I say you need this training aid. It is simple and gives you direct feedback on one of the top 3 most important aspects all great players possess! If you only focus and improve your set up, tempo and impact, I guarantee you will eliminate the confusion in your golf swing and start shooting lower scores quickly!

What is the “proper transition”

Complete shoulder turn to the top, arms stop when the shoulders stop turning
When your weight is full loaded inside your right leg (right handers), you transfer your weight to your left side as you turn through.
If you set the club properly, and have a good transition, you can swing through as hard as you can, as long as you keep your balance on the finish

Practicing with the Gabe Trainer all full swings should have the same transition timing!

Warm up with pitch shots with your sand wedge
Begin full swings with the Gabe Swing Trainer “long release”
Take 5 practice swings with the long release
Hit 10 shits with the long release
Take 3 practice swings with the “fast release”
Take 3 practice swing with the fast release
Hit 5 shots with the fast release
Now incorporate this with your regular 7 iron
Take 3 practice swings putting the feel of the trainer with your normal club
Hit 10 more shots

This gives you feedback, after a few sets doing the drill above, you will start to feel what the proper transition feels like.

Me: How much does technique factor in to being a “good golfer”?

Cameron: “I would say less than 10%. There are guys out here that have perfect Trackman launch monitor numbers, and their swings look perfect on video – but they suck – well don’t suck, but you’ve never heard their name. Technique plays a part in playing good golf – you need to hit the ball consistently solid, then understand what direction the ball is going to fly. Once you establish and understand your ball flight, you need to turn off the trackman and video and get creative, learn how to hit shots and be as competitive in your practice as you can. Challenge yourself through games and drills in your practice, so when you get to the golf course it will seem easy.

Me: Well we aren’t PGA Tour players, but these players have taken private lessons for a while, shoot 70’s-80’s, how would this apply to them?

Cameron: Same way. You might need to spend a little more time on technique to get the swing to a decent position, but you don’t need a perfect swing. You need to learn how to play golf and be creative to hit different shots. You don’t get that by working on your swing technique the entire practice.

Me: What is your pre shot routine like? Do you have swing thoughts?

Cameron: Depending on how that feel that day I might have a swing thought. I typically like to have a swing thought – but that’s just me.

Me: How many swing thoughts? 1,2,3…?

Cameron: 1 swing thought at the most, anything more than that and my head would be spinning! Typically my swing thought is transition (top of the swing) and i add an element of tempo to combine with my swing thought. Some days I have a really good feel, hitting it well and all I think about is the shot I am going to hit and consistent tempo.
If a PGA Tour player cannot think about 1 swing thought, why do we try to think about 5 different swing positions in our golf swing? It’s not possible!

Me: How do you make corrections on the course when you are not hitting it well that day?

Cameron: First thing you always have to ask yourself when hitting a poor shot is – How committed to the shot was I – did I completely trust it? (post shot routine) If your answer is no, then you cannot blame it on a specific swing technique flaw. My first goal is to execute my pre shot routine, establish good feel for each shot in my practice swings then commit to that feel and hit the shot. If I notice I am fully committing and trusting the shot and see a pattern of mishits throughout the round (you keep slicing it right), I will then find one key thought to implement to fix that flaw. After the round, I will go work on that technical flaw until I feel comfortable with it and then focus on my feel so I can apply it on the course in my next round.
Most amateurs will miss it right and left throughout their round because they do not ever commit to their shot. This makes it impossible to identify the swing flaw and fix it since you do not have a consistent pattern – trust each shot, focus on tempo – then see what your ball is doing!

What you should learn from the talk with Cameron Tringale
The same key elements that apply to tour players to play well, apply to the avid amateur golfer. The problem is, we start golfers with a golf lesson whether they are beginner or intermediate and focus solely on the technique of the golf swing. What other sport do you train this way? When you started little league baseball, you started with a practice then went to games. It wasn’t until you wanted to be a high level baseball player did you start taking private hitting or pitching lessons. You start playing the game by learning how to perform in live action in practice on the field and in a game, not by breaking down all your technical positions in your hitting and throwing motion.

Regardless of what scores you shoot now, this should be your development process. Implement block, random and deliberate practice to train your brain to be athletic, simulate playing on the golf course, competition and pressure.

Practice’s should be structured to work on each aspect.
1. Fundamentals (Block) – Stance, Grip, Posture, Alignment, Ball Position
2. Distance Control (Random) – Know Your Yardages. Hit a different club to a different to a different target each ball on the range.
3. Simulate Golf Course (deliberate) – Play on the golf course is the best way to practice. When you have time to make it to the golf course, focus on playing, pre shot routine and scoring your golf ball. If you can’t make it on the golf course, simulate golf course shots and pressure. How do you do this? Pick out a course that you know or you will be playing next. Play the course on the driving range. Go through your pre shot routine, switch clubs and get feedback from each shot (post shot routine). Never hit the same shot twice – just like you wouldn’t in a golf tournament!

Where to Start – Learn how to hit it consistent solid through drills that emphasis contact. Then you can proceed to the following ↓

What direction does your ball tend to curve?
Find a qualified coach to refine that ball flight pattern
Balance all practices with block, random, and deliberate practice structure
There are so many practice strategies players need to implement to improve their game – and they are SIMPLE! Unfortunately, golfers only train technique by racking ball after ball on the driving range hitting their 7 iron or Driver over and over again. Let’s change that and you will be amazed by your fast improvement!

Putting Drill From Cameron
Difficulty: Beginner – Professional
In this video I’m going to show you how PGA Tour player Cameron Tringale works on his putting correctly, which translates to performance on the golf course.

Gathering feedback is mandatory for golfers that want to achieve their peak potential. There are many similarities in what successful athletes across all sports do consistently to perform at their best.

OTHER SPORTS
Take the NFL for example, on Tuesday’s all players sit in a classroom and watch video, going through each play from the previous game. They get very detailed feedback about technical errors, mindset, strategy, etc…

This allows players time to process and fully understand the concepts, techniques and what they would do different the next time they are in a specific situation. If you fail to analyze your game and get feedback from your coach or get feedback from your emotions or mentality then you’re never going to achieve your Peak Performance. So what I’m saying is you need to take time after every practice and every round of golf to ask yourself certain questions. Then track your progress using statistical data. This will pinpoint exactly what the weaknesses in your game are and what you need to work on to take your game to the next level and reach your full potential.

Growing up, I was taught to “swing smooth”, but what does that actually mean?

These “tips” were some of the main reasons that I developed swing flaws I fight 20 years later. I started playing golf in the mid 90’s, self-taught trying to “dig it out of the dirt”. With that came so good and bad habits that I developed.

Swing smooth, explained…. I don’t want to blame anyone, we just simply did not know what “swinging smooth” was. Most people translate swinging smooth, into slowing down through impact – or decelerating. The slower your body moves through impact, the shorter you will hit it, with less accuracy…. why? because if your body isn’t bring the club through, your hands have to. There are great players that are “handsy”, but that requires a lot of timing, to “flip” at the ball consistently for accurate shots.

Instead golfers should SWING HARD…. but first, you need to understand HOW to swing hard. An easy thought for me is this –

Smooth, slower paced backswing (comfortable to my natural tempo/rhythm)

Smooth, slow and controlled at the top of my swing (transition – backswing stops, transitioning to downswing)

Swing as hard as I can – WITH MY BODY ROTATION – hips, glutes, core… while at the same time having the most relaxed upper body as possible (I like to imagine my arms feel like noodles, they just drag behind my body turning down to the ball)

Sure, there are other variables to being a consistent ball striker, but If you can learn how to

Set up to the ball correctly, this will help you rotate or “turn” properly through the ball

Achieve a “proper” position to turn at the top of your swing…

You will play much more consistent golf!

THE FIX

Understand the key golf swing positions

Control the Controllables

Practice your timing, tempo the majority of your practice time on the range

The third element is the most difficult. It is hard to block out all those different swing thoughts and YouTube videos. I suggest buying a Blast Motion Sensor. This helps you focus on only your tempo and nothing else!

These “tips” were some of the main reasons that I developed swing flaws I fight 20 years later. I started playing golf in the mid 90’s, self-taught trying to “dig it out of the dirt”. With that came so good and bad habits that I developed.

THE GOOD

I learned how to score my golf ball. Luckily I had a head pro at my local course that played at Arizona State University and understood the importance of playin on the golf course. As a kid, I did a lot of that. I developed a mindset for scoring my golf ball that most players today struggle to find. The modern era of golf technology has definitely led to better golfers today, but many recreational, junior golfers, and even golf instructors struggle to blend the technology with the art of playing the game.

I learned the core fundamentals... and practiced them daily. With technology like trackman launch monitors and boditrak, we get so typed up in the data that we forget how to be an athlete. What other sport do we focus solely on technique and data when going to see our coach for practice? Just golf, which is one reason why it is the most frustrating sport in the world.

THE BAD

Swing smooth and keep your head down…. I don’t want to blame anyone, we just simply did not know what “swinging smooth” was. Most people translate swinging smooth, slowing down through impact – or decelerating. The slower your body moves through impact, the shorter you will hit it and you will rely on the timing of your hands to flip to hit the ball.

Instead golfers should SWING HARD…. but first, they need to understand HOW to correctly swing hard. An easy thought for me is this –

Smooth, slower paced backswing (comfortable to my natural tempo/rythm)

I hear it nearly every time, “I didn’t have time to go to the course…or it was raining”, etc… We’ve all made the excuse, but like my college coach once said “if you can do 1 thing to get a little better every day, you will become great at this game.”

So, what can you do when it’s raining outside? Here are a few aspects of the game and some golf drills that you may find unconventional, but this is what the pro’s do daily outside of the golf course to improve their game.

IMPROVE SWING POSITIONS, INDOOR

This is false, in fact you probably do more harm to your game by working on your swing technique on the driving range. This trains your brain to thing technically, rather than athletically when you get to the first tee. Your best swing improvements happen without hitting a golf ball, slowing down the swing and perfecting the movement patterns for each swing position. Read more about swing improvements indoor

MENTAL GAME, PERFORMANCE STRATEGIES

Mental Game, the most overlooked, easiest and most beneficial aspect of game improvement. When it’s raining outside you can now feel good about sitting down and working on your mindset. Practicing your breathing technique and visualization should be implemented in your pre shot routine on every shot. Read this blog post for a simple mental game practice

GAME PLANNING

Each time you go out to practice you should have a plan to executive with specific objectives. It is best to write it down on a piece of paper, but if for some reason you don’t have paper, write down your next golf practice on your notes app on a mobile device. Make sure you have a balanced practice with specific details so you can ensure you get better each time you spend time working on your game. Read this blog post for more golf practice plan information.
